Use established fire rings where permitted, never leave a fire unattended, and make sure it is completely extinguished before leaving. When conditions are dry, consider using a camp stove instead. If there is any significant wind, skip the campfire entirely. One spark in the wrong conditions can have lasting impacts on the landscapes and communities that call this place home.

Trailhead and recreation area trash cans fill quickly, especially during busy weekends and holidays. Bear Lockers are not trash cans. If a bin is full, do not leave bags beside it. Take your trash with you and help keep public lands and small communities clean.

Inyo County spans dramatic elevation changes and diverse landscapes. A short walk can quickly become a strenuous adventure due to heat, altitude, weather, or terrain. Carry plenty of water, know your route, start early, and choose activities that match your experience and fitness level. If you’re bringing a dog, remember they experience heat, rough terrain, and altitude differently than people. Pack extra water, know trail regulations, and be realistic about your pet’s abilities. Poor decisions in the backcountry can put you, search and rescue volunteers, and county resources at risk. Help keep first responders focused on true emergencies by planning ahead, being prepared, and knowing when to turn around.
