For thousands of years, Indigenous communities managed and moved throughout
these landscapes seasonally. Communities traveled between valley floors, alpine regions, desert springs,
and mountain passes following water, weather, trade routes, and food sources throughout the year.
Modern recreation areas throughout Inyo County remain culturally important landscapes today.

Death Valley Timbisha Shoshone Tribe
The Timbisha Shoshone Tribe maintains ancestral connections to Death Valley and the surrounding desert regions of Eastern California.

Lone Pine Paiute-Shoshone Tribe
The Lone Pine Paiute-Shoshone Tribe is located near Lone Pine in the southern Owens Valley.

Fort Independence Indian Community
The Fort Independence Indian Community is located near Independence and continues to preserve Paiute culture, language, and community traditions within the central Owens Valley.
